Name: eMate Classroom Exchange
Version: 1.0
Released: May 16, 1997
Requires:
Mac OS computer, a 68020 processor or better or a PowerPC (TM)
processor, system software version 7.1 or later 500K RAM
available (750K is needed for PowerPC computers that have
virtual memory turned off), one or more eMates
Description:
The eMate Classroom Exchange software allows you to connect
one or several eMates to a Mac OS computer and transfer
information between the eMate devices and the computer
simultaneously.

This software consists of a Disk Copy compressed image,
which requires Disk Copy 6.1 or later to use. Download this
software to your hard drive and then double-click it to use
it. Disk Copy is available in the Utilities folder.

From the Read Me included with this software:

eMate(TM) Classroom Exchange Read Me

General

1. The Installer Custom button has no options other than
Easy Install.

Classroom Exchange has only an Easy Install available. There
is a known limitation with the Installer software in that it
assumes all software will have a Custom Install option.

2. When I run the Classroom Exchange server, it tells me
that the printer port or modem port is in use, but my
desktop machine has a Printer-Modem port.

The port names will be incorrect when run on machines that
have Printer-Modem ports, such as PowerBooks, some
Performas, and some LC-class Macintoshes. To eliminate the
conflict, be sure the one port is not being used by another
device or software.

3. When I do a Get Info on the eMate for a document, it
says that it is a Classroom Exchange Server Document not a
Paper or a Drawing.

The Easy Open software isn't installed on your Mac server.
This software would mark the document more specifically as
to the File "Kind" when you see the Get Info dialog on the
eMate. To repair this, you need to rebuild the Desktop file
with Macintosh Easy Open (or MacOS Easy Open) installed. To
do this, open the Extensions Manager control panel, and make
sure that Easy Open is enabled. Then,
restart your desktop machine, and hold down the Command
(Open Apple) and Option keys until you see a dialog asking
if you want to rebuild your Desktop. Click on "OK". Your
file types and icons will now appear correctly.

Word Processing Application

1. If I create a Word Processing document in ClarisWorks
which includes many Library PICTS and convert it to a
NewtonWorks paper, the eMate tells me I'm out of memory when
I try to transfer the document from the server. However, I
am able to open the document on the eMate, but some of the
PICTS are missing. If I check the Memory Information, I
still have a lot of free memory available.

The eMate can reliably handle a WP document that is about
43K in size if it includes Library PICTs. Try breaking up
the large document in Claris into 40K chunks, save them and
then transfer them to the eMate. The low memory message has
to do with the memory required to process the document that
you are transferring. It is similiar to Random Access Memory
(RAM) on a Mac, rather than the hard disk drive "memory"
equivalent on the eMate which is what the Memory Info refers
to.

2. I created a picture using the drawing tools in Microsoft
Works or Microsoft Word and the picture doesn't appear in
the document when I open it on the eMate.

These applications use a technology called OLE which does
not store the picture as a bitmap which the eMate can
recognize. Because the eMate cannot recognize OLE, the
picture isn't transferred. If you want a picture in your MS
Works or MS Word document, use a paint program to create
the picture and then copy and paste it into your word
processing document.

3. When I convert a MS Works document to a Newton Works
paper and then open it on the eMate, it is empty.

If you have MS Works version 3.0 or 4.0 and do a Save As a
MS Works 2.0 and then convert it, it will be blank when
exported to the eMate. If you are using MS Works 3.0 or 4.0,
save the document as an RTF (Rich Text Format) in the list
of SaveAs file format pulldown list.

4. I have Easy Open on my Mac server, yet when I double
click on a Newton Works paper (either drawing or word
processor) I get the dialog box that states: "The document
______ was not created with the application program
"Classroom Exchange Server." To open the document select an
alternate program, with or without translator." The only
option listed is the eMate Classroom Exchange ( the Show
recommended choices is checked but greyed out). When I chose
this nothing happens.

To open a Newton Works Paper by double clicking, a special
Xtnd filter is needed. Currently, this filter is not
available. To open a Newton Works Paper, you need to open
the paper in an application that supports the Newton Works
Paper translator, such as ClarisWorks or MacWrite. If you
use another application that doesn't support the Newton
Works Paper translator, you will need to drag the document
icon to the Newton Works converter and convert it to the
appropriate format.

5. I tried to open a Newton Works Paper that contains a
sketch in MacWrite II and the application crashes.

This is a limitation of the original XTND MacWrite II
filter. If the MacLink Plus translators from DataViz are
installed,(available with system 7.6 or as a seperate
program) choosing the MacWrite II(MacLink) translator will
produce a valid file for use with MacWrite II

Draw Application

1. When I try to convert a ClarisWorks Drawing file to a
Newton Works Draw paper by dragging the icon to the
converter icon, nothing happens - it says it doesn't have
the proper translators.

The Newton Works Converter program doesn't convert
ClarisWorks drawings. The eMate can recognize drawings that
are saved as PICTs only. To ensure that the eMate will
recognize your drawing when you transfer it, create the
drawing on the desktop server in an application that can
save the drawing as a PICT. Do a SaveAs PICT and then
transfer the drawing to the eMate.

2. When I create a drawing on the eMate that includes
shapes with fills and transfer it to ClarisWorks and ungroup
it, the fills all turn to the same gray shade.

To maintain the fill patterns of the eMate, do not ungroup
the shapes. If you need to edit the drawing, you should edit
it on the eMate.
