Low-Memory Troubleshooting

The Color StyleWriter 4000 Series printer software requires
a minimum of 4 MB of RAM for a non-Power Macintosh. For a
Power Macintosh, 8 MB is the minimum, and 16 MB is
recommended.

With certain software applications, printer performance
depends on the amount of memory available for printing.
Having more memory, 8 MB or more, increases your flexibility
in working with applications. These are symptoms of low
memory:

-The computer displays "out of memory" warning messages.
-Portions of a document don't print.
-Printing is very slow.

To make more memory available, try these suggestions:

* Increase the amount of memory you give to the application
you're printing from. Use the Get Info command, as explained
in the documentation that came with your Mac OS-based
computer.

* Quit all applications, restart your system, then start
the application from which you want to print.

* Add more memory to your system. If you are using
memory-intensive page-layout or graphics applications and
printing large documents, adding more RAM is the best
solution.

* Have only one application program open at a time.

* Use the Chooser to turn off background printing, as
explained in your printer user manual.

* In the Page Setup dialog box, choose Portrait (normal)
orientation instead of Landscape (sideways) orientation.

* Use the Memory control panel to turn on virtual memory, as
explained in the documentation that came with your Mac
OS-based computer.

Printing on an AppleTalk Network

The Color StyleWriter 4100 and 4500 can be used on a
LocalTalk network. Although they can be connected using
LocalTalk cabling, problems may be encountered when more
than one user attempts to print simultaneously. Whenever
possible, each user on the network should avoid sending a
print job at the same time as another user and should wait
for the printer to finish its current print job before
sending a new one. Also for best results when printing over
an AppleTalk network, make sure each user turns background
printing OFF.

Printing Tips and Solutions

* Avoiding Conflicts with Application Print Options

Some applications provide their own printing options by
adding checkboxes, buttons, or fields to the bottom of the
Page Setup and Print dialog boxes. A conflict can occur
when these options are also covered by the Color StyleWriter
4000 Series printer software. When the printer software and
the application you use try to perform the same function,
the result can be unpredictable. If a similar option is
already handled through the Color StyleWriter 4000 Series
printer driver, it is a good practice to ignore extra
options provided by an application. For example, if an
application provides an option similar to Color Matching, do
not select both options. It is usually preferable to choose
the option provided by the Color StyleWriter 4000 Series
printer software.

* Using the PhotoGrade Cartridge with AppleTalk

If you have selected the Color StyleWriter 4000 Series (AT)
driver for printing on LocalTalk, you may notice color
shifts in your printed output when using the PhotoGrade
cartridge. To correct this situation, connect the printer
to your computer with the serial cable (as described in
Chapter 1 of the user's manual). Then make sure background
printing is turned off in the Chooser (as described in
Chapter 2 of the user's manual).

* Graycale Printing

To print a color document in grayscale, check the Print in
Grayscale box in the Print dialog box.

* Two-Sided Printing

To avoid smearing ink when you print on both sides of the
paper, make sure the ink is dry before you place the stack
in the paper tray to print on the second side.

* If You See Jaggy Printouts When Printing an EPS File

Images saved as encapsulated PostScript(TM) (EPS) may appear
jagged on all non-PostScript printers. For best results
substitute a TIFF or PICT version of the image.

* When Text and Graphics Are Out of Alignment

Sometimes the text and graphics appear to be in alignment on
your computer screen but out of alignment on your printed
output. If this happens, you need to align your ink
cartridges. For detailed onscreen instructions, refer to
your CSW 4000 Series Printer Guide. Or see the manual that
came with your printer.

Some applications include a Fractional Widths option in
their Page Setup or Preferences dialog boxes. To obtain a
closer match of text and graphics alignment, turn Fractional
Widths on. Your printout will appear closer to what you
have on the screen.

* When Cleaning and Aligning the Ink Cartridges

When cleaning or aligning the ink cartridges, make sure that
you have standard size, cut sheet, plain paper loaded in the
printer. Also, if you have a Color StyleWriter 4500, make
sure that the banner lever is to the left. For instructions
on cleaning and aligning ink cartridges, see the CSW 4000
Series Printer Guide (for onscreen help), or see the manual
that came with your printer.

* When Printing From a Single-Port PowerBook

With a single-port PowerBook, you may see both the printer
port and modem port selections in the Chooser when you
select the Color StyleWriter 4000 Series driver. Select the
modem port, and make sure that AppleTalk is inactive. There
is additional information specific to PowerBook setups in
Chapter 1 of the user's manual that came with your printer.

* If You Encounter a "Printer not responding..." or
"Unable to choose a printer..." Error Message

You may encounter either of the following error messages:
"The printer is not responding. Make sure it is properly
connected and turned on. " or "Unable to choose a printer.
Make sure your printer is connected, powered on and of the
correct type. Verify the printer type by using the Setup
button in the Chooser." If you encounter either of these
error messages, check that the port selected in the Chooser
is the same as the port on the computer that the serial
cable is plugged into.

* Using the Extensions Manager With the Color StyleWriter
4000 Series Software

If you open the Extensions Manager, you may see CSW 4000
Series repeated twice. Do not deactivate either one. These
are not duplicate extensions.

* If You Are Using a Communication Application

If you see the following error messages while trying to
print, "Sorry couldn't complete the operation because of a
system error (2)" or "....a printing error occurred (2)" a
communication application (one that uses a modem) may be
using the port that you've selected for printing. Quit the
application that is using the modem port, or try moving the
printer to the printer port. If you move the printer to the
printer port, you will have to reselect the printer in the
Chooser and select the printer port. Also, if the resume
light on the printer is blinking, press and release it.

System Requirements for Accessing the CSW 4000 Series
Printer Guide

The Printer Guide provides onscreen help and is not
necessary for printing. If you do not have System 7.5 (or
later), you must install specific files in order for your
system to recognize the CSW 4000 Series Printer Guide. The
files and installation information you need are located at
the following web site:
http://www.macos.apple.com/Apple_Guide/

Software Application Notes

If you have problems printing from a specific application,
it may be a problem in that application. Contact the
publisher of the application. In some cases a newer, more
compatible version of the software may be available.

General Note

If you experience breakup in your color outline fonts, make
the text black or change from outline to another style such
as bold or italic.

8*24 GC Graphics Card (Apple)

If you use Apple 8*24 GC graphics card, you may be
dissatisfied with the output when printing with a Color
StyleWriter 4000 Series printer driver. For example,
unexpected lines may appear. You can prevent these problems
by turning off the 8*24 Accelerator feature. For more
information contact Apple Computer, Inc.

After Dark (Berkeley Systems)

If the After Dark screen saver activates while the printer
is printing, printing may stop. (If you touch the mouse or
keyboard, printing resumes.) To prevent this, open the
After Dark control panel and click the When button. Then
select the System IQ Activity Monitor. This allows After
Dark to monitor the computer and not activate the screen
saver if the computer is busy (for example, printing in the
background). For more information, contact Berkeley Systems,
Inc.

ATM (Adobe Type Manager) (Adobe(TM))

Use ATM version 3.5 or later for best results. Some earlier
versions have compatibility problems with the Color
StyleWriter 4000 Series printers. For more information,
contact Adobe Systems Incorporated.

Canvas (Deneba)

Use version 3.0.6 or later for best results. Earlier
versions have some compatibility problems with the Color
StyleWriter 4000 Series printer drivers. For more
information, contact Deneba Systems, Inc.

ClarisWorks (Claris)

If you use ClarisWorks(TM), you may experience problems when
printing with a Color StyleWriter 4000 Series printer
driver. Some outlined polygons will not print correctly if
they were originally created in ClarisWorks. If you
experience this, try creating the polygon in another
application and importing it into ClarisWorks. This should
solve the problem. For more information, contact Claris
Corporation.

Microsoft Excel 4.0

To print in color, be sure to check the Print Using Color
option in the Print dialog box.

Excel does not automatically copy color data into the
Clipboard for either text or graphics. When you create a
chart that has color data, and then copy that data to the
Clipboard, the Clipboard will copy the text and graphics in
black. If you want to copy the image from the Clipboard in
color, you must first select the Print Using Color option in
the Print dialog box. Then click Preview or OK. The Print
Using Color option is saved, and the data can now be copied
to, and pasted from, the Clipboard in color. If Microsoft
Excel spreadsheets will not display in color, disable
DiskLight. For more information, contact Microsoft
Corporation.

Microsoft Excel 5.0 (Microsoft)

When you choose the Page Setup command, you get Excel's own
version of the Page Setup dialog box. Click the Options
button to see the version of the dialog box with the special
Color StyleWriter 4000 Series printer options. For more
information, contact Microsoft Corporation.

Microsoft Word 5.0, 6.0 (Microsoft)

Use version 5.0 or later for best results. Be sure to turn
Fractional Widths on. Check your Microsoft Word manual to
find out how. This will help to ensure print quality. For
more information, contact Microsoft Corporation.

Microsoft Works (Microsoft)

Use Microsoft Works version 3.0 or later. For more
information, contact Microsoft Corporation.

Norton Utilities DiskLight (Symantec)

Use Norton Utilities DiskLight version 2.0 or later.
Earlier versions are incompatible with the Color StyleWriter
4000 Series printer driver. If Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
will not display in color, disable DiskLight. For more
information, contact Symantec Corporation.

Now Utilities Now Menus (Now Software)

Use Now Menus, version 5.0. If you choose the Color
StyleWriter 4000 Series (AT) printer driver from the Apple
(*) menu using Now Menus version 3.01, the printer list in
the Chooser will not display correctly. For more
information, contact Now Software.

PageMaker (Adobe)

To see the Color StyleWriter 4000 Series Page Setup and
Print dialog boxes, click the Setup button in PageMaker's
Print dialog box.

The PageMaker Print and Document Setup settings override the
Color StyleWriter 4000 Series printer driver settings. For
example, PageMaker automatically defaults to print documents
in reverse order. This would mean for example, when
selecting the Two-Sided Printing setting in the Color
StyleWriter 4000 Series Printer driver, you must select the
Reverse setting in PageMaker in order for the document to
print properly. PageMaker's Page Setup settings determine
how the image will appear on the screen. To see how the
PageMaker document will appear when printed, use the Color
StyleWriter 4000 Series printer driver's Preview screen,
which is accessed from the Print dialog box. For more
information, contact Adobe Systems Incorporated.

Persuasion (Adobe)

Use version 2.1 or later for best results.

When you turn Fractional Widths on, you will see a closer
match of text and graphics alignment; your printout will
appear closer to what you have on the screen.

Persuasion does not always scale correctly. If you encounter
problems, use the scaling feature in the Color StyleWriter
4000 Series printer driver.

In Preview mode, patterns and gradations of patterns will
appear more simplified than in the actual printout. For more
information, contact Adobe Systems Incorporated.

PhotoEnhancer Plus for Apple (PictureWorks)

PhotoEnhancer doesn't open compressed TIFF images. To use a
compressed TIFF image in PhotoEnhancer, try opening it with
another application, then copy and paste it into a
PhotoEnhancer document. For more information, contact
PictureWorks.

Photoshop (Adobe)

For best results from PhotoShop, upgrade to version 2.5 or
later. For more information, contact Adobe Systems
Incorporated.

PowerPoint (Microsoft)

For best results, use PowerPoint, version 3.0 or later. For
more information, contact Microsoft Corporation.

Print Shop Deluxe (Broderbund)

Use version 1.1 or later for best results. When printing a
banner on continuous feed paper, you will need to install
the updated preferences inside the PrintShop Deluxe Prefs
folder located in the Software Collection folder on the CD
shipped with your printer software. The updated preferences
are also located in the PrintShop Deluxe Prefs folder on
Disk 4 of the Color StyleWriter 4000 Series Disk Set. The
PrintShop Deluxe Prefs folder also contains a Read Me with
installation instructions for the updated preferences. If
you do not install the updated preferences, margin gaps may
be the result when you print banners. For more information,
contact Broderbund Software.

QuarkXPress (Quark)

Use QuarkXPress version 3.1 or later for best results.

If you print a document containing an image in JPEG or TIFF
format, do not select a background color for the graphics
box that contains the image. If you select a color other
than White or None, your computer might freeze while the
print job is spooling.

If you want a colored border for your picture, select Frame
from the Item menu and choose a color and point size for
your frame. Or you can create a second, larger graphics box
with a background color and place it behind the one
containing the JPEG or TIFF image. You can also convert your
graphic to a PICT or EPS file and then select a colored
background for your graphics box. For more information,
contact Quark Inc.

Stencil It! & Web It! (Kaetron)

Shapes created using the Polygon tool will print only on the
first page of a multi page document. For more information,
contact Kaetron.

SuperLaserSpool (Fifth Generation Systems)

Version 3.0 works well with the Color StyleWriter 4000
Series printer driver. You must disable or remove
SuperLaserSpool 2.02 and earlier versions in order to use a
Color StyleWriter 4000 Series printer. For more information,
contact Fifth Generation Systems.

SuperPaint (Adobe)

Use version 3.0 for best results. Earlier versions of
SuperPaint have compatibility problems with Color
StyleWriter 4000 Series printer drivers. When printing,
always have the object or draw layer (the compass icon) in
the foreground. If you do not, SuperPaint may crash during
the print job. For more information, contact Adobe Systems
Incorporated.
