This file contains late-breaking news about the LaserWriter Pro printer
family and Windows printing. Some of this information is not included
     in your printer manual.

USING YOUR LASERWRITER PRO WITH WINDOWS 3.1
     -------------------------------------------

     POSTSCRIPT DRIVER
Use the PostScript driver from your original Windows disk set or obtain
the latest Windows driver from Microsoft customer support. Your
LaserWriter Pro will operate with versions of the PostScript printer
driver for Microsoft Windows 3.1 greater than 3.50.

At the time this document was created, the latest PostScript Printer
Driver for Microsoft Windows 3.1 was version 3.55.

     PAPER TRAYS
The Windows printer driver's Paper Source and the LaserWriter Pro's
Paper Trays are named differently. The following table shows the paper
trays that correspond to the Windows paper source options:

WINDOWS PAPER SOURCE LASERWRITER PRO PAPER TRAY
          -------------------- --------------------------
          Upper Tray 250-Sheet Paper Cassette
          Manual Feed Multipurpose Tray
          Envelope Feed Envelope Feeder (optional)
          Envelope Manual Multipurpose Tray
          Large Capacity 500-Sheet Cassette (optional)

     ENVELOPE FEEDING
The icon on the printer's Multipurpose Tray does not match the envelope
feed direction for Windows version 3.1. Place envelopes in the Envelope
Feeder or Multipurpose Tray address-side up and stamp-end first.

     NOTEPAD AND CARDFILE APPLICATION PROBLEMS
The Notepad and Cardfile applications that come with Windows 3.1 do not
print properly when the printer resolution is set to 600 dpi. To print
using these applications, select the 300 dpi printer driver.

USING YOUR LASERWRITER PRO WITH WINDOWS 3.0
     -------------------------------------------

     POSTSCRIPT DRIVER
Use the PostScript driver from your original Windows disk set or obtain
the latest Windows 3.0 driver from Microsoft customer support.

     PAPER TRAYS
The Windows printer driver's Paper Source and the LaserWriter Pro's
Paper Trays are named differently. The following table shows the paper
trays that correspond to the Windows paper source options:

WINDOWS PAPER SOURCE LASERWRITER PRO PAPER TRAY
          -------------------- --------------------------
          Upper Tray 250-Sheet Paper Cassette
          Manual Feed Multipurpose Tray
          Envelope Tray Envelope Feeder (optional)
          Envelope Manual Multipurpose Tray
          Large Capacity 500-Sheet Cassette (optional)

     ENVELOPE FEEDING
The icon on the printer's multipurpose tray DOES match the envelope feed
     direction for Windows version 3.0.

     MULTIPLE PRINTER DEFINITIONS
The Windows 3.0 PostScript printer driver allows for a total of five
installed printer definitions. Printer definitions added after the first
five are ignored by Windows. Printing may fail if you try to print to a
specified printer when more than five definitions are installed.

To reduce the number of printer definitions installed with your
PostScript printer driver, make the following changes in your WIN.INI
     file:

     1. Find the [PSCRIPT] section in the WIN.INI file. The section should
         look like this:

         [PSCRIPT]
         External Printers=4
         printer1=qrs415
         printer2=pdp432
         printer3=lwntx
         printer4=tl3323

     2. Delete lines with unneeded printer definitions.
     3. Renumber the remaining printers, starting with 1.
     4. Change the value for "External Printers" to reflect the new total.
Remember, only the first five printer definitions can be accessed by
         Windows applications.

     USING THE PRINTER UTILITY SOFTWARE
     ----------------------------------

Included on this disk are utility files to control the advanced features
of your printer, including PhotoGrade, FinePrint, and tray switching. To
learn more about these features, refer to Chapter 1 in the LaserWriter
Pro manual. The following files are located in the UTILITY directory:

         FILE FUNCTION
PHOTOGRE.PS Enable PhotoGrade grayscale printing enhancement
PHOTOGRD.PS Disable PhotoGrade grayscale printing enhancement
FINEPRTE.PS Enable FinePrint text printing enhancement
FINEPRTD.PS Disable FinePrint text printing enhancement
TRAYSWIE.PS Enable automatic paper tray switching
TRAYSWID.PS Disable automatic paper tray switching
CONFIGPG.PS Print current printer configuration settings

Copy the appropriate file to the selected printer port to invoke these
     functions. For example:

     COPY A:\LW_PRO\UTILITY\PHOTOGRE.PS LPT1: [Enter]

This command enables PhotoGrade, where A:\LW_PRO\UTILITY\ is the drive
path where the utility file resides and LPT1: is the computer port to
which the LaserWriter Pro is connected.

     USING PHOTOGRADE
     ----------------

     USING PHOTOGRADE IN WINDOWS 3.1
PhotoGrade grayscale printing requires the following to operate:

     1. PhotoGrade is available on the LaserWriter Pro 630, or on the
LaserWriter Pro 600 with at least 8 MB of memory.
     2. Enable PhotoGrade by copying the Enable PhotoGrade utility file to
         the printer port.
     3. Install a LaserWriter Pro printer driver configured for 300 dpi.
     4. Use the Advanced Options dialog box to configure the halftone
frequency and halftone angle settings in the LaserWriter Pro printer
driver. PhotoGrade works with the following values:

         FREQUENCY ANGLE NOTES
         150 0
106 45 RECOMMENDED FOR MOST APPLICATIONS
          83 56
          75 0
          53 45

With most applications, setting halftone frequency to 106 and halftone
angle to 45 yields the best results.

When printing black and white instead of grayscale, install the 600 dpi
     driver for best results.

     USING PHOTOGRADE IN WINDOWS 3.0
PhotoGrade grayscale printing requires the following to operate:

     1. PhotoGrade is available on the LaserWriter Pro 630, or on the
LaserWriter Pro 600 with at least 8 MB of memory.
     2. Enable PhotoGrade by copying the enable PhotoGrade utility file to
         the printer port.
     3. Install a LaserWriter Pro printer driver configured for 300 dpi and
         PhotoGrade.

The Windows 3.0 LaserWriter Pro printer driver that supports PhotoGrade
is configured for halftone frequency of 106 and halftone angle of 45.
Halftone Angle and Halftone Frequency are not user configurable in
     Windows 3.0.

When printing black and white instead of grayscale, install the 600 dpi
     printer driver for best results.
